We are now in a position to detail how the Adventurous Land Activities team will provide support throughout the County:-

*   Have one central point of contact for all permit applications and activities advice - ACC (Activities) .
*   Fully Implement the associations Adventurous Activity Permit Scheme across the County by December 2008 - Permit Scheme.
*   Generate a central County Database of all Activity Permit holders to ensure leaders stay abreast of current best practice.
*   Review all existing activity authorisation holders and re-issue with a relevant Permit under the new scheme.
*   Build a small team of qualified Assessors who will be able to offer assessments, training and advice.
*   Build a larger team of leaders with permits, who are prepared to offer support and activities across the County
especially at larger County wide events - training will be available for any interested Leaders.
*   Produce a Calendar of Training and Assessment Opportunities.
*   Offer a range of personal skills events to adult memebers - such as - Snowdonia trips, Dartmoor weekends covering Hillwalking,
Climbing and Mountain Biking experiences - where adults can advance there personal skills or even try something new.
*   Offer technical help and support to organisers of large scale events with regard to adventure activities.
*   Provide support to DC's, GSL's and others being asked to make decisions on leaders technical competence to lead an
adventure activity where a permit is not formally required - Terrain 0, Archery, Crate Stacking etc.

Could all leaders note:

All Land Adventurous Activities authorisations issued before May 2008 need to be renewed using the Scout Associations New Activity Permit Scheme -
you have until 1st January 2009 to renew any current permits.
After this date all existing authorisations will cease to be recognised in the County.

To renew your permit - submit a Permit Application Form along with copies of current authorisations, first aid certificate and log of experience
to Roger Lowden - ACC (Activities) -
Post to - 19 North Down Crescent, Keyham, Plymouth. PL2 2AR
or electronically to activities@cornwallscouts.co.uk

Why the Change  :-  The Scout Association required all Counties to implemented the New Activity Permit Scheme by September 2007, since taking up the role as ACC (Activities) in May it has become apparent that this has not fully happened - therefore we are taking this extraordinary approach to ensure all leaders delivering adventure activities in Cornwall are in fact meeting the associations rules and therefore leaders and young people are fully insured and protected.

In most cases where leaders have been actively using their current authorisations and can produce copies of relevant awards - the transfer to the new scheme will be very much a paperwork formality - on rare occassions a practical re-assessment might be required where someone has little or no logged experience in the last three years. Therefore we ask that all leaders work with use to ensure that we are all fully protected to continue delivering high quality Adventure Activities to our members.

Ever wanted to go to Timbuktu, to paddle your own canoe, to go where “no man has trod”? Now is your chance! The famous Cornish explorer Richard Lander discovered where the river reached the Atlantic and I with others paddled the last part of the river some years ago. The plan is to go as Scouts and have local Scout Leaders paddling with us, we have the National Scout Organisations en route getting organised for our arrival in a year’s time.We are looking for experienced open canoeists who can wilderness camp and like the tropics, knowledge of French would be an advantage.
For an informal discussion please contact me at brian.sheen@virgin.net or 01726 813602.
